On The Topic of Google…

So, now I have been switching many of my services and web use to Yahoo!. This all started over Google’s little political spats…. I don’t really care, but it was annoying.  So far, the move has been rather smooth, and I am still getting things organized. I still have my Google account, but time will tell for how long.

Anyhow, on to the main topic.

Google is apparently going to announce their own web browser, something unlike any browser out there.  I will be interested to see what they release, but so far we know that it will be open sourced.  My question for Google at this point is why they would release their own browser instead of supporting Mozilla Firefox.  If they really wanted to fight Microsoft’s IE, then it would only make sense that they would back the best (and open source, mind you) candidate available.  Mozilla Firefox has been closing in on the 20% market share milestone, and has been predicted to pass that point this year.

  1. As much as I hate to disagree with you, the architectural changes Google has outlined for their browser seem (to me) to make it superior to Firefox. I think the only other way to achieve those goals would’ve been a Firefox 4.0, without a significant portion of backwards compatibility (extension-wise) with 3.0. In other words, a new browser under an old name. For all we know, they approached the Mozilla team about it and Mozilla declined to pursue that venue.

I have had too many times where Flash or Javascript has hosed my browser and screwed up a dozen other tabs. If Chrome’s architecture really works the way they indicate it will, this looks like a significant evolutionary step in the browser, not just a competitor.
