I’ve Got Compiz!

After running an update of Ubuntu 7.10 to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, I now have desktop effects!

The new ATI driver in the Ubuntu 8.04 (codename Hardy Heron) works with my ATI Radeon XPress 200M graphics card.  I upgraded without installing any updates or drivers though the “restricted drivers.  The upgrade went smoothly, and all I had to do was remove bittorrent.  No problems here, and even my wireless works!

Congratulations! I had the same experience with a 200M on a Pavilion zv6000-series machine. Two years ago in Dapper I couldn’t get it working so it’s quite satisfying to see the effects work right out of the box.

Actually, I think it worked under Gutsy too, but the card was blacklisted because it wasn’t quite perfect. There were a lot of cards like that, where you could get the effects if you un-blacklisted your machine. Hardy is better this way though.
