McD’s uses FreeDOS!?

Something caught me by surprise today as I wheeled around the drive-thru at my favorite restaraunt:

While I am usually greeted by golden arches and red background in the “terminal” (do they have an official name for it?), I was surprised to see a black screen, with small text that read “FreeDOS kernel Go!”

Whodathunkit?

Nice. I am occasionally surprised to hear about various embedded systems and what they use. It makes perfect sense to use FreeDOS, after all… it’s there, and it works great for its target niche.

If only their food was as lean as their OS’s!

Reminds me of the time I was giddy to walk by a Lowe’s employee computer and noticed it had an IceWM-looking desktop. I wasn’t sure so I kinda lurked until an employee came over and opened a window for a text app called genesis. I then spotted a small X in the program’s taskbar thingie.

First time I’ve ever squealed in excitement at a hardware store. That employee must have thought me insane.
