IBM Lotus Symphony: It Works!!!

I am so happy to try out the new release of Lotus Symphony, beta three, which based on the IBM site, was released on January 8th.

the previous releases would install on my laptop, but since they required so much memory, I was completely unable to run it. This time, things have changed. While the application runs slow(er) than OpenOffice, it still runs. Keep in mind I only have a laptop with 512 MB RAM. The applications have been moved into a single menu item as well, simply called “Symphony”.

Here’s some screenshots:

Here’s the welcome screen.

Next, is the word processor:

I will post a review after I give Symphony a run around the block. Until then, give it a try for yourself!

It feels a lot like OpenOffice.org and StarOffice in some ways. Is it in some way derived from one or the other codebase, or is this something original from IBM?

It even has the sxw format listed as “IBM Word Processing Document”.

Though, the tabbed interface is nice. I know someone who has been complaining that OpenOffice.org doesn’t have that for a while. I need to explore it more, though.

IBM’s Lotus Symphony is based of of OpenOffice 1, and which version of 1 I am not sure, I just know that they decided to use an older version of OpenOffice on which to build off. Since OpenOffice is based on StarOffice, they all are in the same code-base family.
